The Venues

These are some of top venues who support local music and usually book some great local shows!

Aar-d-vark Blues Cafe.
89 University Ave. West
(519) 977-6422
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Most nights, but you gotta be blues...
ATMOSPHERE: Another Windsor landmark. Granted, you have to be primarily blues-based to land a gig here, but the vibe in Aar-d-vark's is tres unique. It's a dingy little hole in the ground that somehow feels like a cross between the House of Blues and that Cantina from Star Wars. But rarely do you leave without having a killer time.

The Avalon Front.
300 Ouellette Ave.
(519) 254-1316
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Friday Nights
ATMOSPHERE: Cool vibe, a haven for the coolest and swankiest in Indie Rock & Pop. One of the A list circuit bars that brings in the best of local talent as well as established National and International acts such as Controller:Controller, The Dears, The Marble Index, The Organ, The Junior Boys, Sakamoto and New York Doll Sylvain Sylvain. The crowds are fervent music fans and respect anything as long as its played well and with passion.

Bridge Tavern.
1886 University Ave. West
(519) 252-1075
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Always live music
ATMOSPHERE: Another West end drinking hole that looks like it's about to fall apart but that's part of its charm. The Bridge has more "roots" oriented music, such as Blues, old time Country and Celtic, but Rock and Roll isn't necessarily outlawed. Always a raucous time.

Broken Barrel Bar & Grill.
1353 Wyandotte St. East
(519) 254-4895
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Friday and Saturday Nights
ATMOSPHERE: Almost a rock and roll party at one of Windsor's newest live music venues. The crowd is always receptive and the atmosphere is one of anything goes as long as it rocks. Bands must supply their own P.A., but a good band will always do well.

Changez By Night.
960 Wyandotte St. East
(519) 252-4600
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Sometimes
ATMOSPHERE: Another legendary dive/haunt in Windsor. Always a cool atmosphere, albiet a dark one. Primarily a hang out for the punk and metal crowd, many a Day Glo Abortion has graced these walls with their vomit.

The Chubby Pickle Rock N' Roll Saloon.
762 Ouellette Ave.
(519) 254-8515
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Tuesday and Wednesday are Indie Nights
ATMOSPHERE: Big rock club downtown. Massive sound and lighting system, reminiscent of the Rum Runners and California's days. The Pickle is slowly becoming a top notch player on the booking circuit, bringing in some of the top drawing local acts as well as National acts like Social Code. Local modern rock radio station 89X recently brought Korn to the Chubby Pickle.

The Coach and Horses.
156 Chatham St. West (Lower Level)
(519) 256-9844
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Practically every night.
ATMOSPHERE: The Coach is legendary in Windsor. It is the dankest, dirtiest, trashiest dive in town, but it is the ultimate venue for LOUD rock and roll, crazy punk rock and the heaviest of heavy. Sweat, blood and beers add to the odour of this pure rock and roll heaven.

Dominion House Tavern.
3140 Sandwich St.
(519) 971-7400
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Sporadic
ATMOSPHERE: Windsor's oldest bar/tavern, the "Ditch" is a notorious West End drinking hole and lovable dive. Or at least it used to be a dive. New owners have cleaned the place up (unfortunately) but it's still a fun place to get drunk and listen to the occassional band.

Gino A. Marcus Community Centre.
1168 Drouillard Rd.
(519) 253-7028
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: As per booked.
ATMOSPHERE: Well, its a community centre gymnasium, so it'll feel like your prom but with all the cool kids invited instead. It's became a haven for all kinds of all-ages punk shows.

The Kildare House.
1880 Wynandotte Ave. East
(519) 252-4003
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Music every night
ATMOSPHERE: The Kildare House is one of Windsor's best kept secrets (although it isn't really that well kept!). It's a geniune British pub with that total UK feel and appeal, from the beer to the scotch to the grub. The music is strictly pub fare, primarily East Coast or Celtic.

Leopard's Lounge.
1190 Wyandotte St. West.
(519) 254-6107
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Wednesdays
ATMOSPHERE: Leopard's has introduced us to the Rock and Roll Sex Party on Wednesdays now. Take a rock and roll band and add strippers. It's that easy. Now it doesn't matter who you were prior to the night's performance, when the lights hit and the speaker's crackle, you are now Motley Crue in the "Girls, Girls, Girls" video. Oh, and did I mention there would be strippers?

Liquor Box Dance Club.
2155 Wyandotte St. West
(519) 253-1007
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Sunday All-Ages Shows
ATMOSPHERE: Part of the triumverate of bars on Wyandotte with the dirty names - along with Big Dick's and Twig & Berries. But while Big Dick's is more of a low key college hang-out and T&B more of a pub-style, Liquor Box is more of the wild side. Hootchie mama's dancing on most nights, with all-ages punk shows on Sundays.

Milk Coffee Bar.
68 University Ave. West.
(519) 256-1414
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Sporadic but occassional.
ATMOSPHERE: Arty hang-out for the philosophically beautiful. The bands who play here tend to be more low tempo, lo-fi, and/or experimental. They serve absinthe though, so it's always a fun place to chill.

The Mill.
3199 Sandwich St.
(519) 253-2509
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Occassional bookings
ATMOSPHERE: Another bar to hit the Sandwich and Mill crossing, The Mill has become a local fave for University students on the West end. With a great pub vibe and serious drinkers, The Mill's crowd is always up for a good time. Usually limited to occassional acoustic acts, some full bands do find work here.

Octane Nightclub.
2629 Howard Ave.
(519) 966-8383
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: All-Ages venue
ATMOSPHERE: Despite its slightly out of the way location, it seems to be the only reliable venue for all-ages shows. This place should be taken advantage of more often than it is.

Patrick O. Ryan's Irish Pub.
25 Pitt St. East
(519) 977-5722
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Wednesdays and Saturdays
ATMOSPHERE: Windsor's largest and arguably most popular Irish pub, it has live music every night of the week except Mondays (although most nights are steady gigs for certain performers). The music is limited to East Coast and Celtic music but if you can pull it off well, the crowd is always eager and loud.

Phog Lounge.
157 University Ave. West
(519) 253-1605
tom@phoglounge.com for Booking Requests
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Practically always.
ATMOSPHERE: The recent 2005 Jammy winner for "Best Local Club", Phog has quietly taken Windsor by storm. Phog is a small, intimate club for the lush and beautiful. Great atmosphere, great sounds, it has also become an A-List live venue, combing great local talent with National and International acts such as Julie Doiron (ex-Eric's Trip), A Northern Chorus, Magneta Lane, Cuff the Duke, Great Lakes Swimmers, Joel Plaskett and Robin Black.

Rock Bottom Bar & Grill.
3236 Sandwich St.
(519) 258-7553
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Mostly acoustic duos and cover acts.
ATMOSPHERE: A West side landmark. This is one of the premiere hang outs for the older college crowd. Great food and atmosphere for having a few beers and seeing old faces. The music is more of a background soundtrack to a good time, but the good times can be had for sure.

Room With A Cue.
255 Ouellette Ave.
(519) 252-5991
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Mostly cover acts but some original bands squeak through.
ATMOSPHERE: Very upscale lounge/bar. Not most original bands' cup of tea and vice versa. But the sound system is great and if you can get the right audience, it can be a decent night.

Spicoli's Barley Bin.
3206 Sandwich St.
(519) 973-1856
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Thursdays, Saturdays
ATMOSPHERE: A West side hang out, more of a college student joint than most of the other venues. But don't let that intimidate you. The crowd's can be most accomodating to different sounds.

Sky Lounge.
261 Pellisier St.
(519) 977-8787
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Occassional
ATMOSPHERE: Small and intimate club with a great atmosphere and super friendly staff. The music is sometimes merely background to getting away from the routine downtown hustle, but it's always pleasurable. Highlighted weekly by a stunning Thursday night gig featuring local music celeb Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe (formerly of Big Sugar) and his new backing band, The Witnesses.

The Thirsty Scholar.
University of Windsor.
(519) 253-3000
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Sometimes.
ATMOSPHERE: Located in the University of Windsor's CAW Student Centre, it is the official University pub/bar. Always a rowdy crowd, the Scholar does book original bands in, sometimes locally and sometimes Nationally, such as Bedouin Soundclash.

Treehouse Bar & Grill.
351 Ouellette Ave.
(519) 252-6626
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Thursday and Sundays
ATMOSPHERE: A relative newcomer to the live music experience (at least from the original acts stand-point). Another "booty bar" on some nights, the Treehouse is branching out, starting with various all-ages shows on Sundays.

The Zebra Room.
485 Pelissier St.
(519) 255-7772
LIVE MUSIC BOOKINGS: Occassionally
ATMOSPHERE: Not exactly known for their live music performances, they do however have them once in a while. Usually its done through DJ Lee and "The Electric Front", the Industrial radio show who runs a dark music themed night on the last friday of every month. Since the theme is Industrial, Synthpop, etc., the bands are generally limited to darker edged bands along same genre. For more info, check out The Electric Front.
